The New 7 Wonders of the World

Research Scenario

In Reading class, you have read about the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. These were all man-made monuments, selected by a Greek named Philon of Byzantium in 200 B.C.  His selection of wonders was essentially a travel guide for people in ancient Greece, and the sites were all located around the Mediterranean basin, the then-known world. Today, the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt is the only monument that remains from the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

In 2001, a man named Bernard Weber founded an organization called New7Wonders, dedicated to investing in the preservation and restoration of architectural landmarks and monuments around the world. Weber revived the ancient Greek concept of the 7 Wonders of the World in 2007 with a global campaign to choose the official human-made New 7 Wonders of the World.  The key difference is that, this time around, the Wonders were not chosen by one man, but rather by millions of people all over the world. The new Wonders are the people’s choices, and they have been drawn from the earliest time that humankind walked upon the earth up through the year 2000. Over 100 million people around the world voted online for the New 7 Wonders of the World.

In 2011, a new campaign began to choose the New 7 Wonders of Nature, and in 2012 people begain voting for New 7 Wonders Cities. You may have an opportunity to research these wonders in 7th grade Reading class next year!

Since we can't do that this week, instead you will be taking a "virtual trip" to these architectural landmarks. You will be use reliable, authoritative online resources to research one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. Your purpose for research is to find out what makes this landmark so special and significant and to answer the essential question:

To help you select a topic for this research, your teacher will present an overview, some digital photos, and the world map location of each of the New 7 Wonders of the World.

  • Teachers: Just click each Wonder on the digital image to display the overview content.
  • Students: Number your research topic choices in order of preference after previewing the New 7 Wonders of the World.
